Paid surveys are not new, despite all the hoopla. Marketing research firms have been paying consumers to participate in surveys, focus groups and such for some time. But the Web has granted them a more-efficient way to collect data. So, many now conduct legit, online paid surveys and other types of paid, online marketing research.

But many questionable, "middleman" paid survey sites are poisoning the well, by hyping easy money for participating in online marketing research from home. When there's competition for selling an easy-money scheme working from home, you can bet that there's also exaggeration, if not outright scams.

Many questionable middleman sites charge "membership" fees for access to lists of marketing research firms that conduct online paid surveys. But you can find many for free, by searching the Web. It's how this writer found 60+ to review for this article. It's also likely how the membership sites found most they list. Regardless, some try to dupe you into believing their lists are special. But, according to messages on scam forums, their lists are essentially the same as others. Worse, some also list other membership sites, trying to dupe you into buying essentially the same list over and over again. They include sites that seem to be their competitors, because they earn referral fees or commissions when you click the links or buy memberships. A couple mentioned in scam forums even try to dupe you into buying the same list at other membership sites they own under different domain names. So, natch, these sites have incentive to exaggerate how much you'll earn from online paid surveys.

Other middleman paid survey sites provide free lists. But, many are effectively in cahoots with the questionable membership sites, because they too earn referral fees and commissions by hosting links and ads for membership sites. So, they too have incentive to exaggerate.

If anybody is earning a living from online paid surveys, it's considerably more probable to be middleman-site owners than participating consumers. Of the 60+ paid survey sites reviewed, most "pay" only token rewards in the form of goods, services, coupons or samples. Many pay cash only through sweepstakes. Even if you're lucky enough to win several sweepstakes, it likely won't lead to early retirement. Prizes at most reviewed sites range from $5-200 in cash or goods and drawings are only occasional. Some pay with points that are redeemable for cash or goods. Typically, you must rack up a bunch to redeem them for anything of significance. Most pay nothing or only sweepstakes entries for completing screening surveys, that determine your eligibility to receive certain paid surveys. A couple don't pay much of anything, unless you recruit others as in pyramid schemes.

A few paid survey sites reviewed do pay relatively well in cash. But questionable middleman sites hype hypothetical, best-case scenarios that can't possibly apply to each and every consumer for each and every hour he or she participates. In the real world, the likelihood that you'll often earn the higher of the hyped amounts is slim. Besides the reality that most simply don't pay much, you must be invited to complete paid surveys. To be invited, you must fit targeted demographics. That alone limits your earnings right off the bat, as you can't possibly fit every demographic.

Consequently, despite what questionable middleman sites imply in their "dream job" hype, it's unlikely that you'll earn a living from paid surveys and other marketing research. You might, however, earn or win some extra spending money, or free or discounted goods or services.

Most reviewed paid survey sites effectively promise not to share personally-identifiable information or not to share it without prior consent. It's an industry standard, by which legit marketing research firms are bound. But many membership sites reviewed don't make either promise, or do so only in a limited or wishy-washy way. Unauthorized go-betweens such as membership sites don't have to honor the marketing-research industry's privacy standards.

Consequently, by joining, you might have also rolled out the red carpet for the membership site or its unnamed "marketing partners" to solicit you. (Some who joined membership sites reported in scam forums that they were swamped by spam only minutes later.) Your personally-identifiable information is worth a small fortune to direct marketers, especially since the U.S. Federal Trade Commission pushed for legislation in 2002 to stop unsolicited telemarketing calls. Ask yourself if a few extra bucks, iffy sweepstakes and other token rewards are worth the aggravation of dealing with potentially dozens of pestering privacy invasions that offer nothing for your time.

All things considered, it's no surprise that some of the marketing research sites reviewed disclaim any connection with membership sites. Real paid survey sites pay you, not the other way around.

Pinecone Research Review

I am always looking for ways to generate extra income into our household. What better way, than by doing something I already enjoy doing?

Over the past twelve months, I have signed up for more than fifty Pay Programs.

The Pay to Click sites require more time and effort, than I am willing to give.
Especially after one of those sites burned me for thirty dollars!

Most of the Survey Sites, have never bothered to contact me after I registered.
Others do contact me asking me to participate in surveys, that will reward me by placing my name into a monthly drawing. Yeah, right. I feel this is a scam, where no one wins. I do not waste my time on these surveys.

On a more positive note, I have found three sites that actually do pay you to take surveys.

Pinecone Research, (formerly known as Acorn Research) is one of the three sites that I have found to be legitimate. It is the most dependable and consistent survey program I have found, making it my favorite.

Membership at Pinecone Research is not an easy task to accomplish. It took me six months to become a panel member. I made several unsuccessful attempts, by going to their website and looking for a link to join. Finally after I had given up on the idea, a friend of mine sent me the sign up page. Becoming a member, is definitely the hardest part.

Pinecone Research invites me to participate in surveys twice a month, on the average. It is my understanding they will also send my husband and children surveys that apply to them. I am the only one in my household that has been asked to participate, so far.

I have found the surveys to be very interesting. The surveys are very easy to complete, usually taking only ten to fifteen minutes. I like learning about new products*, before they hit the shelves. I have been looking for a new, low fat product* that I took a survey on last month. It is not available for purchase yet. I will buy it as soon as it becomes available.

Pinecone Research also sends products* for me to try, via UPS. I am currently trying one of the products*. I am not as interested in this product*.
But that's the beauty of it~
I can try it, and it doesn't cost me anything. Actually, they pay me to find out if I like it or not.

I am very impressed with the promptness of payment from Pinecone Research.

I was paid five dollars in advance for the first survey I participated in. I have received five dollars every time I have taken a survey or tried a product.

Sometimes it takes up to three days for the check to make it to my mail box. I think this an extremely acceptable amount of time to wait.

I am happy to be a member of Pinecone Research. They have always done exactly what they said they would do. I have never needed to contact Customer Service. I do have
an email address and a telephone number for Karen Scott, should I have any problems.

I do wish I could participate in surveys more often. But two surveys a month that actually do pay ~ are worth much more than any amount of surveys that ~ "will enter your name into our monthly drawing "!

Getting Started. Once you sign up to become a member at the Town Hall, you will gain access to the Opinion Outpost Grand Hotel members area. Currently they our offering 10 points for each referral. Our first recommendation is to fill out the ten profile surveys in the members area. These profile surveys are not rewarded, but are quick to fill out, and especially make a big difference in the amount of surveys you receive from opinion outpost.

What to expect? After you sign up and complete your member profiles, Opinion Outpost will email you survey invitations when they have studies that match your profile. Each invitation will indicate the points that you can earn for completing the survey and the estimated time it will take to complete the survey. Most survey average between 10 to 100 points depending on the length of the survey. At 10 points = $1, most surveys pay between $1 to $10 dollars. Each survey starts out with some qualify questions, and if there are still open slots for your profile, you will be allowed to complete the survey. This is why it is a good idea to take the surveys as soon as you can after you get the email invitation. The amount of surveys you will receive depends on your profile and the current studies being conducted, but in general you should expect about four to eight invitations per month. Again, be sure you fill out your member profiles and keep them up to date, this makes a big difference with Opinion Outpost. I noticed a big difference in the amount of surveys I received after completing the profile surveys.

Like GlobalTestMarket, all of Opinion Out surveys are rewarded with points. Once you have accumulated at least 50 points you can go to the Bank in the members area and redeem your points for cash. They will pay you with a check as shown in the example below; you can expect to receive it within 6 weeks by mail.

Advice: Since you may not qualify for all of the surveys, and since Opinion Outpost does not send a large amount of surveys, we recommend that you take all of the surveys that they send you. Opinion Outpost requires that you attempt at least on survey every three months to maintain good standing as an active member. Failure to do so will result in a loss of your accumulated points! So, if you are not getting many surveys, check your profiles section, and make sure they are completed and up to date. The most important advice is to answer the surveys honestly, and to take time to answer them correctly. Rushing through the surveys will often cause you to overlook something and as a result not qualify for the survey. The better your responses, the more likely it is that you will be invited to take future paid surveys.

Ciao: Paid Surveys Information

Ciao pays you to write online product reviews and answer paid surveys. It is optional if you choose to write product reviews, some people just choose to answer the surveys, other decide just to write product reviews. It is completely up to you, though obviously if you write product reviews and answer paid surveys then you will earn far more money.

Paid Surveys

After applying to join Ciao the free paid survey website, you will need to login to your account online to activate the surveys. You do this by answering your 'Basic Interests Profile'. This is a list of questions related to employment, family and lifestyle. These questions are asked so that Ciao knows which kind of surveys to send you, as they will only need to survey specific markets and certain groups of people. You can complete this by logging on to the Ciao website with your new username and password, and then click the 'Surveys' link at the top right of the screen. Complete the sections of questions on screen (should take around 15 minutes) and then within a few hours or a day you will start being sent surveys to complete by e-mail.

Types Of Surveys

If you complete your profile fully you should be sent 3 or 4 surveys per week, but this will depend on the type of person that you are, and will also depend on the demand for market-research. The surveys sent can be based on anything; from household products to Internet websites. Ciao will send you an email with a clickable link that takes you to the survey, which will be opened in a new window in your Internet Browser. The e-mail will state the amount that you will be paid should you complete the survey and also an estimate for how long it should take to complete. The rewards vary from about 70p to as much as £50 in some cases, and the surveys take between 5 and 30 minutes to complete (usually).

Unanswered Surveys
When Ciao send you a survey to complete, you usually have around 3 or 4 days to complete the survey. If it isn't completed within this time limit then usually the survey will expire, as enough people will have probably already replied. If you miss a survey, or just can't be bothered to reply to the survey, then you won't miss out at all. Obviously you won't get paid for that particular survey, but you will still be sent other surveys and won't be punished for not completing the last survey. At Ciao you are under no-obligation to complete any of the surveys sent to you, but obviously if you don't then you won't make much money from the website.

Checking Your Survey Earnings
Though every survey sent to you will contain an amount that you will earn from completing that particular survey, it is always nice to be able to see an overall amount for all the surveys completed and all the earnings generated. This can be done on the Ciao website at any time. Simply log on to the Ciao website and then click on the 'My Ciao' text link at the top right corner of the screen. Then click on the 'Account' tab at the middle-left of the screen. This will bring up a view of your Ciao account, where you can see earnings made from referring members to the site, writing product reviews and from answering paid surveys.

Requesting A Payment
At the moment Ciao only send payments out to members via a bank transfer. The Ciao website is completely safe and secure, and they deal with millions of members online accounts; it is a very safe and quick way to receive your account earnings. To request a payment from Ciao your account balance must be at least £5. To receive your first payment from the Ciao website you will need to login and click the 'My Ciao' text link. Click on the 'Settings' link and then select the 'Enter/Edit Bank details' text link. Enter in your UK bank account number and then sorting code. SurveySpot sends more survey invitations than most panels, so we only recommend that you take the cash incentive surveys that you feel are worth your time, and to take a few sweepstakes surveys a month that have topics that are interesting to you. Unless you simply have lots of time, I would not recommend taking all of the survey invitations they send out.
